Films that make you want to go on holiday

Monday 7 January 2013

Last week, I was cosied up on the sofa with a friend, putting some serious TV hours in. We were flicking through the channels, when we happened upon Mamma Mia.

Ropey as it is, there are a few things that make it worth a watch. Meryl Streep is one. Spotting the sadness and shame behind Pierce Brosnan's eyes while he attempts to sing is another. But mostly, it's all about the beautiful island on which it was filmed, and wanting to be there.

Incidentally, I know a man who took his wife on a surprise trip to this very island, Skopelos, where he set up the famous church scene to renew their wedding vows. He even lit the lanterns all the way up the path. She was mortified. And all of the men who knew him were seething.

Anyway, all three reasons for watching the movie are in this clip. Meryl, the pretty church, and Pierce Brosnan not having a CLUE what to do while she sings at him for a prolonged period of time.

All of which got me thinking about other films that leave you dying for a holiday. Here are a few that come to the top of my head, but I know I'm forgetting some good ones. What are yours? Let me know in the comments!

Wet Hot American Summer

Ever since Bug Juice, I've wanted to go to an American summer camp. And now I have Wet Hot American Summer, I can go any time I want, with the special bonus of Amy Poehler!

Manhattan

Pretty self explanatory, is it not?

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Definitely gives me a hankering for Hawaii. And Jason Segel.

Over to you!
